Registration
Registration for Kindergarten Students: Registration for Kindergarten students entering the Valhalla UFSD is generally held in March of each year. Children who will be 5 years of age by December 1st of that year are eligible for registration. Registration takes place at the Virginia Road Elementary School . The names of the resident parents/guardians who have children eligible for kindergarten are on the census. Consequently, most parents will be contacted directly. If you are not contacted, please call the Principal at the Virginia Road Elementary School, Mrs. Ada-Jimenez Parker, at (914) 683-5035. All Kindergarten screenings take place in the late Spring for a September start date. Residence: According to New York State Education Law, a child’s legal school district residence is generally considered the residence of the parent, unless there is evidence that the parent has given up care, custody and control of the child. Questions of residence for children who are not living with their parents are to be referred to the Superintendent’s Office so that the proper papers may be filed and residency may be determined. The Superintendent of Schools can be reached at (914) 683-5040 to address any questions pertaining to residency and/or the enrollment of non-residents on a tuition basis. New Entrants to the District: Grade placement of all children who attended other school districts will be in accordance with their prior school records, the recommendation of the school and the judgment of the Principal of the school in which the child was registered. In the absence of official school records, the District will place students according to chronological age. All new entrants to the District are required to submit proof of age and residency to both the Office of the Superintendent and the building in which they will be attending. For those students living with one parent as a result of a divorce/separation or with another adult through a transfer of custody and care, legal documents will need to be presented at the time of registration. New Student Registration 1st through 12th Grade: In the event that you have recently moved to the school district with a school-aged child, you will need to enroll them in either public or private school immediately. Failure to do so could result in the need to involve the Westchester County Department of Social Services as a result of compulsory attendance laws in New York State. If it is your intention to enroll your child or children in a private school, please make sure to check with the Business Office in order to determine whether or not Valhalla is responsible for transporting students to that particular private school. The Business office can be reached at (914) 683-5040. Please note that Valhalla is not responsible for any tuition associated with your decision to unilaterally place your child or children in a private school setting. In the event that you intend to enroll your child or children in Valhalla, you will first need to provide proof of residency followed by making an appointment to register at your child's schools. Proof of residency takes place at the District Office by contacting the District Clerk at (914) 683-5040 to arrange for a mutually convenient time to do so. When arriving at the District Office, you will need to have the following documents with you:
Upon presenting this information to the District Clerk, the Office of the Superintendent will verify that the address is within the boundaries of the school district, that the address - if an apartment - is a legally constituted one, verify court documents pertaining to custody and authorize your ability to make an appointment with one of the school buildings. Please note, that the school district will, on occasion, employ a private investigator to confirm residency documents that appear suspicious. In addition, the school district will cooperate with any requests from the IRS to turn over lease agreements in our possession. Valhalla requires in-person registration. No parent or guardian will be allowed to register their child or children without personally visiting both the District Office and the individual school building or buildings. New student screenings will be arranged for and conducted by individual school buildings when and where required by law or found necessary for the purpose of placement. In the event that you are registering a student who is eligible for special education services as outlined on an IEP, it is strongly recommended that you contact the Office of Special Education in addition to the District Clerk when registering. The Office of Special Education can be contacted at (914) 683-5034. Questions pertaining to registration should be directed to the District Clerk at (914) 683-5040.
